Luggage Tracking and Lost Bags
Airline Baggage Fee Traps and How to Avoid Them
The size, weight and fare-type rules that trigger surprise baggage charges, and how to check them before you reach the airport.
Why fees surprise people
Airlines publish baggage rules, but they live across several pages and change by route, fare type and even booking channel. A bag that was free on one flight is charged on the next. The result is that many travelers learn the rule at the counter, when the only options are to pay, repack or leave something behind.
The common traps
Weight limits: a bag a little over the limit may trigger a fee that costs more than the bag's contents are worth. Size limits: a bag that fits overhead on a large plane may not fit on a smaller regional aircraft. Fare type: the cheapest fares often exclude a carry-on bag or even any bag at all. Personal item rules: some budget carriers enforce small dimensions strictly and measure at the gate.
Another trap is mixed itineraries. If your trip combines two airlines, the rules of each carrier may apply on different legs, and the stricter one can decide what you pay.
A pre-packing check
Before you pack, look up the baggage page for each flight on your itinerary. Write down the carry-on and checked limits for size and weight, and what your fare includes. Pack within the strictest limit. Weigh the bag at home with a luggage scale, and measure it including wheels and handles.
Pack to avoid the fee
Wear the heaviest items, such as boots and a jacket. Put dense items in a personal item if it has a looser limit. Use compression to reduce volume, but remember that it does not reduce weight. Leave a margin of a kilogram or two, because scales differ.
If you are already at the counter
Ask whether a different bag arrangement is cheaper, such as moving items between bags to balance weight. Compare the airport fee with the cost of shipping or buying a small extra bag. Remember that paying online in advance is often cheaper than paying at the airport.
